Streetside Memorials?

Lately in the new has been alot of talk about the memorials that are put up by surviving family members of homicide victims (92 in Milwaukee now but thats another rant) and/or accident victims.
Store owners and private citizens alike complaining that these memorials are an eyesore, gathering places for trouble, not taken care of and against the law.

Of course the family members are understandably grieving and use these memorials as a way to deal with it.

So who's right? Should they be allowed? Because of the law the city could just go in and remove them be it a bit harsh.

I'm a bit torn but I believe I lean a bit towards not having the memorials on the city streets. Personally, I would tend more towards putting a memorial to a loved one in a cemetary instead of the site where they were gunned down. Putting these memorials up obviously hasn't had a detering effect on the amount of shootings in this lovely city. I can honestly tell you that if someone got killed in front of a store that I owned I would not want a big memorial on my sidewalk to look sloppy and remind all my customers what a wonderful neighborhood they are shopping in.
Could be why there is a standing city ordinance against putting things like this on the streets.

So what do you think?
If I had to decide the issue I would have to say leave the memorials in the cemetaries where they belong and concentrate on cleaning up your neighborhoods instead of putting up reminders that you haven't.

I have always felt the roadside memorials are a double edges sword.

In west Virginia they were all to common, but there they actually served a purtpose. Usually thes memorials were found as a result of fatal car wrecks. And they got the attention of state officials who took measures to make those problem areas safer.

memorials of murdervictims on city streets are just trouble. They leave avenues for gang insignia, they create clutter and abacteris breeding grounds. NO ONE ever cleans them up, everything is just left to rot and stink and fester. Creating not only an eyesore but a health hazard.

Keep your greaif where it belongs, don't cram it down your neighbors throat. Memorials do nothing for the dead, and in this case little for the living.
